Biography

Grant C. Fowler, M.D., is the academic chair of Family Medicine at the Burnett School of Medicine and President-elect for JPS Health Network. He will transition to Chief of Medical Staff for JPS Health Network in 2028.  Dr. Fowler will still maintain his roles as Chair of Family and Community Medicine and Associate Director Program Director of Family Medicine at JPS Health Network and Chair of Primary Care and Geriatrics at Acclaim Physician Group

Dr. Fowler, an expert in geriatric and sports medicine, served as vice chair of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston Department of Family and Community Medicine beginning in 1998. He also served as interim chief or assistant chief of family medicine and director of family medicine inpatient service at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston since 1991.

Additionally, Dr. Fowler was residency director for the University of Texas Medical School at Houston Family Practice Program from 1991 to 1998. Clinically, Dr. Fowler practiced full-scope family medicine in the Texas Medical Center and in the Harris Health System from 1990 until 2017. This means he performed cardiac exercise stress testing, colonoscopies, esophagogastroduodenoscopies, vasectomies, dermatologic procedures, joint injections, etc. while also supervising residents with deliveries. He also regularly made rounds and took call at Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center Hospital.

Education

Dr. Fowler is a National Merit Scholar graduate of Rice University with a degree in Chemical Engineering.  Upon receiving his Medical Degree from the University of Texas Houston McGovern Medical School, he completed his residency at UT Houston Memorial Family Practice.

Research Interests

His current research and teaching interests focus on Preventative Medicine including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and procedures. He also has an interest in both Geriatrics and Primary Care Sports Medicine, being board certified in both (Certificate of Added Qualifications).

Professional Societies

Dr. Fowler is on the Board of Directors of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP), he has also completed two elected terms on the Board of Directors of the national Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors. In addition, Dr. Fowler has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Harris County Academy of Family Physicians. He served on the Executive Board of the Harris County Medical Society and was elected Chair of their Ethics Committee. His numerous honors include the 2016 Texas Academy of Family Physicians Exemplary Teaching Award, the 2017 University of Texas System Regents Outstanding Teaching Award and induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society as an alumnus in 2015.

Select Publications

Author or co-author of over 100 articles, book chapters, and monographs, he has also served as an editor for several professional publications. Most recently, he revised and is the sole senior editor for the bestselling textbook from Mosby/ Saunders/ Elsevier, Pfenninger and Fowler’s Procedures for Primary Care.
