Student Access and Accommodation

1. A student seeking disability-related accommodations should contact Alana Yanagida, Access and Accommodation Specialist via email Alana.Yanagida@tcu.edu or phone 817.257.1023.
2. Submit an online application for accommodation to the Student Access and Accommodation office. Students will use their TCU username and password to access the online application. Student Access and Accommodation will confirm by email to the student’s official TCU account when the application has been successfully submitted.
3. Once the application has been submitted, students will be prompted via confirmation email and provided a link to submit supporting documentation based on their disability type(s) from an appropriate medical provider that meets the University’s official documentation guidelines.
4. As part of the application process, students are also asked to complete relevant intake forms. Intake forms are initially sent as part of the application confirmation email and can be submitted digitally from your TCU email or uploaded with your documentation.
5. At any point in this process, students can schedule an appointment to speak with a Disabilities Specialist regarding their accommodation needs.
6. All accommodation requests are reviewed by the Student Access and Accommodation Documentation Review Committee (DRC). Accommodation requests cannot be reviewed until an application and documentation have been submitted.
7. A follow-up appointment will be requested once the documentation and accommodation requests have been reviewed. Students will be sent an email through their TCU email account to schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss the outcome of the review.

The United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®), the three-step examination for medical licensure in the U.S., provides reasonable and appropriate accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for individuals with documented disabilities.

The USMLE provides general guidelines for requesting accommodations, which includes submission of the Request for Test Accommodation Form, a personal statement, an evaluation by a qualified professional, and relevant objective records of impaired functioning. Receiving accommodations during undergraduate medical education does not guarantee that a student will receive USMLE accommodations.

In its consideration of accommodation requests, the USMLE relies heavily on records of demonstrated impaired function, making it important for Burnett School of Medicine students to seek approval for and utilize accommodations early in their medical education.

Students who have never been evaluated for a disability or those in need of updated documentation must be assessed by a qualified provider/evaluator.

The name, title, and professional credentials of the provider/evaluator, including information about license or certification (e.g., a licensed psychologist), the area of specialization, employment, and the state/province in which the individual practices, should be clearly stated in the documentation.
