In this workshop participants will focus on turning empathetic reflection into compassionate action. It isn’t enough to be empathetic, one must demonstrate empathy through action, thus becoming compassionate. In this second part, we will translate skills in empathetic reflection into clear, effective compassionate actions such as active listening, YES AND statements, and the discovery of one’s own authentic, deliberate verbal and non-verbal styles.
Objectives:
- Define the terms:
- Compassionate action
- Yes, AND
- Discuss difference between gesturing at compassion and authentic compassion
- Demonstrate yes, AND styles of communication
- Appreciate the connections of a multidisciplinary approach to intentional listening
- Reflect on the challenges endemic to listening
- Adopt a position of curiosity and inquiry and practice asking generative questions
- Expand abilities in observation, description and analysis
