“Territory Unknown” is a graphite drawing art piece that represents the fi eld of medicine through the lens of a student learner. A tortuous pathway opens in the depths of a forest and at first glance, the area is overstimulating, daunting and the journey seems terrifying. A closer look reveals that the scenery grows and offers an incredible, multi-sensation-evoking experience –elegant trees caressing the stream, and calming water tumbling through the rocks, falling without hesitation.
When I started my medical education journey, both this forest and the medical field were territory unknown. The field of medicine is vast and every day we build our knowledge base to grow as future physicians. The healing world of healthcare is magical, and the process of medical education is multi-dimensional and enriching. Parallelly, this journey can simultaneously be overwhelming, nonlinear, and challenging. For me, I developed a lasting sense of belonging in this forest when I, myself started to believe that I belong here.
It was an intrinsic mindset shift and a decision to understand that I may not have all the answers or skills at this moment, however, I can find the tools to grow, transform, and evolve to not only walk this path but also thrive while serving others.
While acknowledging my fears of uncertainty was important, finding strength to take steps towards seeking information and bridging the gap between the known and unknown proved essential. Gaining perspective helped me understand that I’m never going to be completely “ready” or “fearless” to take on the challenge. My initial feelings of inadequacy have been replaced with the excitement of learning and growing by embracing the unknown.
